On Sunday 10th February many ISCA Dragons junior players could be spotted at St Luke’s College playing for representative school teams in the Devon mini-hockey championships.
The ISCA Dragons team consisted of: Vicky Anderson (GK), Sally Crawford (GK), Georgie Rutter, Cara Martineau, Naomi Rubbra, Katy Caspar (Captain), Katrina Tucker, Shannon Beverley, Amy McLauchlan
The team played four matches in their section and finished in third position, just missing out on qualifying for the semi-finals. They got stronger and gained in confidence throughout the tournament and worked with real determination and enthusiasm. In a rather tentative first game against Exeter School the girls lost 1 – 0 but started to show signs of settling down as a team. Against Teignmouth, despite numerous shots not finding the target, Cara and Katrina scored in the 3 – 0 win. Our next opponents were Mount House who had looked tough to beat but the team played superbly to win 3 – 0. They kept this effort going in the next match against Ivybridge, where a win was needed to ensure a semi-final place. Despite dominating the game and having a large number of shots saved by the oppositions keeper, Ivybridge scored a breakaway goal to put us out of the tournament. The girls should not be disappointed. Vicky and Sally shared the goalkeeping, Georgie and Shannon were very supportive of each other in defence, Katy worked tirelessly in midfield, Naomi and Amy fought hard on the right, Katrina made some great runs down the left and Cara dominated upfront.
They were a very enthusiastic and determined bunch which was great to see.
Well done to them all and a big thank you to Karen Hayes for umpiring on the day.
