Peggy (Margaret) Tremlett,
founder member of Red Demons (the old girls team of St Wilfred’s
School), founded the club in 1946; fully supported by her husband
and Life Long Member of the club, Donald Tremlett, who umpired
for the club for many years and remained an enthusiastic supporter
until his passing in 2002. Red Demons merged with Green Dragons
in 1966 and Peggy Tremlett chaired the joint club from 1967 through
to 1982.
Unfortunately, it is not known when Green Dragons was founded
but certainly in 1959 club business was recorded at the AGM. If
you know of the date please do tell and indeed any further history.
In the season of 1959/1960 Green Dragons had 28 paid up members
and 5 occasional members; in 1986 it was recorded that the club
had 43 paid up members supporting 3 teams; with 2006 recording
150 paid up members supporting 5 league teams and 70 juniors.
It is recorded in the earliest AGM minutes that Green Dragons’ home
ground was King George V Playing Fields, and certainly this remained
so, apart from a 4 year break at St Thomas Cricket Club, until
1993 when the Club moved to the first astro pitch in Devon based
at Ottery St Mary and then to Exeter School.
Forgotten are the days of having to maintain the pitch yourself:
remember creosote and white chalk, those nets with holes in, repairing
back boards – what an easy life we now enjoy!
Recording of senior subscriptions in 1966 were 30/= and 12/6d for
unemployed. In 1976 senior subscriptions were £4 with
a match fee of £0.40 and tea £0.20. 1986 records
a senior subscription fee of £12 and £1 for match and £0.50
for training, and in 1996 subscription was £25, match fee £5
and training £1. In 2006 the all in membership fee
was £210 for adults.
Another of the Club’s Life Long Members, Julia Sanders,
joined in 1969, became President in 1981 and then moved to the
mantle of Chair until her resignation at the AGM held on 19 May
1998.
There is a lovely comment recorded in the 1987 AGM minutes: “… the
umpire was last seen heading for the seafront with her Labrador
and carrying a white stick.”
1989 saw the commencement of the West League where Green Dragons’ first
team entered Division 1 South, and the second team entered Channel
Division in 1990. The third and fourth teams entered Channel
Division 2B in 2000.
The first team were promoted to West Premier in 1991 and sadly
relegated back to South Division in 1992. Their next promotion
came in 1996 to West Premier Division 2 but in 1998 faced relegation
again to South Division. The next promotion came in 2000
to West Premier Division 2 followed by the next win in 2003 to
West Premier Division 1.
The second team suffered relegation to Channel Division 1 in 1998
but gained promotion to South Division in 2001. Their next
promotion to West Premier 2 Division came in 2004.
The third team gained promotion in 2002 to Channel Division 1.
In 2003 the fifth team was formed as a friendly team mainly competing
in the Plymouth League. 2004 saw them enter the West league
into Channel Division 2B and win the league in their first season
joining Sedgmoor Division 2 in 2005. They continued the winning
streak by gaining promotion to Sedgmoor Division 1 in 2006.
Miles of smiles from the Under 18 team who won the West Clubs
championships in 2003. The 2006 Under 15 team achieved third
place in the England Hockey National Finals of the Knockout Competition
enjoying 3 successful wins en-route to the finals.
The Club underwent a name change in 1996 to Isca LHC. 1998
saw Anne Baker offer a lifeline to the now floundering club. At
an EGM held on 28 April 1999 the merger between the Club and Exeter
University Ladies was unanimously accepted and the club name became
Isca & University LHC. Following another unanimous vote
the Club underwent another name change in 2002 to Isca Dragons
LHC.
Sue Norman resurrected the junior section in 2000 with on average
20 youngsters attending training. In 2006 the average attendance
at training was 70 girls with ages ranging from 7 to 15 and great
enthusiastic participation in Active Sports festivals.
